Thanks to the continued reliance on electronic devices at work, digital eye strain is becoming increasingly common and the need to protect your eyes at work is more important than ever. Digital eye strain is the physical discomfort you feel after spending 2 hours or more in close range of light from a digital device.
The good news is that digital eye strain is avoidable when you take the required precautions. Below are easy steps you can take to protect your eyes at work:
1. Keep Your Screen At Arm’s Length
The ideal distance between your eyes and your computer screen is about 24 inches. Adjust your screen so that you’re looking downward, i.e below your eye level. You’ll find this position to be more comfortable not only for your eyes but also your neck and back.
2. Blink. Blink. Blink.
This may seem like a no-brainer but the fact is we forget to blink a lot of the time, especially when staring at a computer screen. Reminding yourself to blink every few minutes while working will ensure your eyes continue to get the moisture it requires to keep you comfortable.
3. Adjust Your Display Settings
You can make your computer more eye-friendly simply by adjusting your screen brightness to suit your surroundings. Enlarging text size will also help in reducing eye strain, giving them a much-needed break. If you’re even more tech-savvy, you can take it up a notch by making the colour temperature of your computer warmer. This helps to minimise the blue light emission and eye strain in the long run.
4. Take A Break
You may have heard this before, but following this simple exercise will do a lot in relieving digital eye strain. Look away from your computer at an object 20 feet away every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds.
